Hello and welcome to our creative space! My name is Amy and I’m originally from the United States. I live in Herrsching with my husband Sebastian and our sweet cat Paula and I’m happy that you’ve found your way to our beautiful creative space in Seefeld.
Art and creativity has always been a huge part of my life. As early as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to color and shapes and textures. As a child, I spent endless hours making hand crafted gifts for the people in my life and at one point I even created finger paintings to sell to neighbors and friends! Creating was always something that was a respite for me, a calm and welcoming space when life became challenging, and it remains so to this day. I find my creative time to be deeply therapeutic, and no matter what goes on in my day to day life, I always have to have a creative project or activity going on. I don’t think there has ever been a time when I didn’t save that colorful scrap of paper or soft piece of yarn with the thought of using it in a future art project of some kind.
While I was never formally trained as an artist, I believe that much of my creative nature has been passed down from the women who have come before me. I love using old, antique and vintage materials in my work, whether that be fabric, paper or small personal items that hold special meaning. By doing this, I feel as though I bring with me into the present day the passion and creative nature of the women in the generations before me. I have such fond memories of watching my grandmother sew or seeing my great grandmother make her own hand designed Christmas ornaments. I have learned and continue to learn so much by watching and seeing what others create, and I am able to take pieces of what I see and find ways to make it my own. This, for me, is what art and creativity is all about. And it’s a process that continues to grow.
Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to explore so many different creative techniques and I love learning new and unusual ways of putting different materials together. I find it so exciting when I see an artist do something completely unconventional. I also find it so inspiring to hear artists and artisans talk about their work and how it brings meaning to their lives.
Something that is very important to me is the actual process of creating. I don’t think we are taught, as artists or creatives, to just experience the process and create for the sake of creating, as opposed to focusing solely on the result that comes from our work. For me, the richness and wonder comes with this process, and when I can stand back at look at, or hold in my hand what I’ve created, it holds so much more meaning for me.
I love working with different textures, and putting different textures and materials together in new and often unusual ways. I love rough and unfinished edges, mis-matched shapes, and colors that may not fit together and playful re-creations of things we see in our every day life. It brings me so much joy to create something even if may only be pleasing to my eye. This is where art and creative expression becomes calming and healing for me. When I can create for my eyes and ears and senses alone. If my art is pleasing to others, this is a wonderful bonus! It can be a struggle in a world where importance is placed on producing something that is designed to be accepted by many. I feel that art is such an intimate expression of who we are as individual people and I hope I can share that with others, especially those who may feel they aren’t creative. We are all creative and the secret is finding that which makes your heart happy. It takes courage to share this creativity with the world, even if that world is just a small group of people. I love having such a warm and welcoming space for others to explore the dreams and ideas they have, and to discover a world of ever growing new ideas.
I’ve had the good fortune to work in some amazing fields throughout my life. I helped care for children at risk as a social worker, and I helped families welcome new life into the world as a midwife. Both careers were highly rewarding and helped me grow as a person. I now have the opportunity to do something I always wanted to do… I can focus on nurturing my creativity full time in this wonderful historic Apotheke! And I’m so fortunate to share this beautiful space with Katja, and learn from her vast creative talent and experience. I hope that you find some inspiration and joy as you learn more about our space! Hi! Mein Name ist Katja, ich bin in München geboren, in Herrsching aufgewachsen und wohne jetzt seit über zehn Jahren in Hechendorf, mit „meinem Mensch“ (wie die Tochter einer Freundin immer so schön sagte), meinem Hund und zwei Katzen.
Künstlerisches, kreatives und handwerkliches Arbeiten haben mich tatsächlich schon mein ganzes Leben lang begleitet. In der Grundschule waren meine Heftränder mit Pferdezeichnungen dekoriert und ich ging regelmäßig zum Töpfern. Während meiner Jugend nahm mich meine Mutter kontinuierlich zu kreativen Angeboten mit – allgemeines Zeichnen, Portraitzeichnen, Aquarellmalen, Papierschöpfen und freies Arbeiten mit Ton. Außerdem beschäftigte ich mich selber mit allen möglichen künstlerischen Techniken wie z.B. Linoldruck und Kalligrafie. Meinen Schulabschluss machte ich dann auch, wenig überraschend, an der Fachoberschule für Gestaltung.
Im Anschluss besuchte ich ein Jahr die Freie Kunstwerkstatt München um meine zeichnerischen Fähigkeiten weiter zu entwickeln und neue Materialien und Methoden kennenzulernen.
Lange begeleitete mich der Wunsch in irgendeinem kreativen Feld zu arbeiten – Illustration, Grafikdesign, Industriedesign und Innenarchitektur gehörten zu den Ideen. Die Aufnahme zu diesen Bereichen war nicht einfach da die Berufe zu der Zeit sehr beliebt waren und schließlich entschied ich mich dagegen, weil mir die Vorstellung auf Knopfdruck kreativ sein zu müssen schwierig war.
Da ich eine große Bücherliebhaberin war und sehr gerne las begann ich eine Lehre als Handbuchbinderin. Das handwerkliche Arbeiten hat mir sehr große Freude gemacht und ich habe dort sowohl inhaltlich als auch organisatorisch viel gelernt. Allerdings stellte ich nach der Gesellenprüfung fast, dass es eine Ausbildung ohne Zukunftsperspektiven ist: Handbuchbindereien gibt es wenige und kaum eine der Auszubildenden im Buchbinderhandwerk fand nach der Ausbildung eine Stelle als Gesellin.
So widmete ich mich meinem anderen Interesse – der Arbeit mit Menschen und studierte nach mehreren Jahren der Arbeit im sozialen Bereich Soziale Arbeit. Eine ganze Weile habe ich mit Menschen mit körperlichen Behinderungen gearbeitet und diese Arbeit sehr geschätzt. Sehr viel mehr geprägt hat mich die langjährige Arbeit bei mira Mädchenbildung in einem Traumteam mit mehreren Frauen. Diese Arbeit hat mich sensibilisiert für die Lebenslagen von Mädchen und jungen Frauen mit unterschiedlichen Fähigkeiten und Behinderungen, hat meine feministische Haltung geprägt und mich in der Bildungsarbeit geschult. Auch hier habe ich mit Gusto den kreativen Teil der Arbeit eingebracht und übernommen und viele lustvolle Kunstseminare konzipiert.
Zusammen mit einer Freundin Werkstatträume zu finden mit der Möglichkeit auch etwas der hergestellten Gegenstände zu verkaufen ist ein langjähriger Traum. Es kommt mir daher immer noch vor wie ein doppelter Lottogewinn, dass meine liebe Freundin Amy, eine wunderbare Künstlerin, mit der ich diesen Traum teile nach Herrsching gezogen ist und wir zeitgleich unsere wunderbare, ehemalige Apotheke gefunden haben.
